Theatre

The aim of Tambo theatre is to do and develop quality theatre with social messages for the communities as well as on theatre stages.

Until now there has been a lack of possibilities to do stage performances in Pemba. We have done some work shops at the local cinema with invited local groups like Novos Horizontes, so they also could experience making theatre on a stage and learn some of the techniques that it involves. These work shops were headed by Vitor Raposo. He has many years experience of stage performing theatre from Maputo, that has a lively theatre scene.

The construction of a stage at the our cultural centre will improve greatly the possibility for us and other groups to have more experiences to perform on a stage and use the techniques and artistic effects it offers. For this to happen we have received very important support from Hivos.

It will also open up for that many more people can enjoy watching stage performed theatre. A possibility that is very limited in Pemba as for now.

The Tambo theatre is characterized by imaginable effects, strong musical involvement, portraying local problems with local solutions.

The latest plays "Vestígios de Pegadas" (deals with the conflict between man and wild animals, aids and social conflicts in a small village) and "Estigmatição" (about the social situation when being infected by HIV) are both developed from the above mentioned principles.

From theatre rehearsal:

The female actors of Tambo in 2006 made and performed a play about the problems that women are facing when attending the maternity clinics.

The youth theatre of Tambo is doing their plays about the importance of education, how to deal with HIV and other realities of being a young person. Their program also includes clown acts. This is inspired by a work shop by Care and some Spanish clowns / phantasmagoria performers that one member of Tambo attended. Our idea is to transfer this "new" way of doing theatre to several schools but due to lack of funding it is for the time being only implemented in our youth theatre training.

A part from inviting other groups for works shops we also make common events. One of these was the the mimic theatre competition "Gestos Falam" (Gestures Talk) of ASUMO-Pemba, which is the Deaf Association of Mozambique in Pemba. We assisted in organizing the event as well as assistance at their rehearsals. They performed at the Tambo Festival 2006.

We have also enjoyed a very fruitful visit of Theatre Embassy (Holland) during 2007. The work shop focussed on mime and improvisation.

Working with artists from other back grounds and ways of performing theatre is very important in bringing theatre forward. Therefore we aim at working with different artists in exchanging ideas and promote the diversity of theatre to the public in Pemba and other places.

One of the ideas for the future is to bring theatre of Pemba into the world of making movies. From the movie 'Sign of Steps'
